Are Phones the New Cigarettes?

July 23, 2019 by Cameryn Orlowski

Cell Phones Are a Part of Our Everyday Lives, But it May Have Major Consequences in the Future

There seems to be a pattern where the more phone usage someone has in a day, the more anxiety they can experience. Phones have become a large part of our lives, but would you consider this necessarily a good thing?

Some people have become so addicted to their phones that they compare it to cigarette addiction. Phone addiction has become a

problem that many people aren't aware of. Would you consider yourself a phone addict? Before answering this question see if you could go for two days without your phone. If you can, you have passed the test.

Figure 1: Graph of how Americans use their cell phones
Watch this short cartoon to see the effects phones have on our lives

The Average American is More Reliant on Their Phone For Daily Tasks Than Ever Before

Figure 1 exemplifies what Americans are using their phones for. It has come to the point where you could use your phone for nearly everything. If you have a question you want to be answered within seconds then simply pull up Google. Need to fax something over to your boss? There's an app for that.

We have become so reliant on our phones because let's just face it, It makes our lives much easier. The problem with phones and technology, in general, is that it can be very distracting. According to the National Safety Council, cell phone usage has caused nearly 1.6 million car crashes in one year. All it takes is a glance at your phone to get sidetracked and lose control of the wheel.

Cell phones also have an effect on children too. The younger a child receives their own phone, the less motivated they are to do activities such as sports, going outdoors, interacting with other children, etc. Now, I'm not saying that cell phones are the worst thing for us, but we should be aware of the consequences they have on our lives.

Cell Phones Are Affecting Our Communication Skills

The video to the left is a cartoon about the effects of cell phone addiction. This issue has been an increasing problem in millennials and younger generations.

Have you ever walked into a public area and noticed that almost everyone is staring down at their phone screens? I know I have. When we are distracted by our phones we are missing out on the opportunity to meet new people, see different things, and open our horizons that the world has to offer.

Studies have shown that there is a lack of communication skills with people who use their phones more than the average rate. People forget about the skills required to talk to someone face-to-face which is a key skill to have in life. Whether you consider yourself a phone addict or not, be aware that phones are changing who we are as people.

Swimwear Model

Fake, Fake, Fake

Social Media is Portraying a Fake Lifestyle

Social Media is Affecting Our Persona

Models Are the Face of Consumerism

Every person who has Instagram should have some idea of what an "Instagram model" is. As I scroll through my Instagram feed I see thousands of Instagram models that all seem to have the same qualities. They're skinny, have perfect lives, and dress in the best clothing.

The issue here is that companies are purposely making these models look this way so you're more willing to buy their product. This is the whole idea behind consumerism and it's clearly working.

For example, the picture to the right is a woman who could be a model for a bathing suit company. When consumers see this photo they think that if they buy the swimsuit they will be as perfect and happy as the model in the picture. Instagram is increasing this portrayal because models are now using it as a business platform to sell their latest products.

There has been recent worry about the Boeing 737 aircraft. According to the article in the Chicago Tribune, there has been two crashes in the past five months from Boeing. There had been changes in the control system and engine that may have been the cause of the crash. Since these two crashes, there will be more regulations and inspection with these aircrafts internationally.

Boeing 737's are more narrow than traditional planes. They can hold up to 230 passenger seats and tend to consume less jet fuel than other planes.

The link below goes into more detail about the fatal Boeing 737 crashes.

Recommendations For Any Frequent Flyers

If you're a frequent flier don't be worried. Flying is the safest way of transportation. The chances of a plane crash are one in 11 million. If you still have your doubts, the biggest recommendation is to avoid Boeing 737's until their complications are solved.

Ways To Relax Your Nerves On Flights

The best thing to do on flights is to take deep breaths. Be confident that you are in safe hands. Bring a book, laptop, music, or anything that will distract you from heightening your nerves. Think about the vacation or new location you're about to explore!

How To Clean Your Gut

July 23, 2019 by Cameryn Orlowski

Have You Ever Just Felt... Bleh

Have you ever felt like you needed to cleanse your body from toxins and impurities? I tried a juice cleanse for 3 days, and all I consumed was juice!

Juicing can be very beneficial, but only if you do it in the right way. If you're a busy person like most people in this world, you're probably lacking a few nutrients that are vital to your health. Juicing is basically a way to pump all those necessary vitamins and nutrients back into your system.

Being on a juice cleanse doesn't mean you buy a bunch of orange juice or apple juice from the store and drink it for three days straight. If you're serious about going on a juice cleanse I would suggest doing your research before hand.

I went to my nearest juicery and consulted an employee who is an expert on juice cleanses. They gave me the necessary juices for each day and also gave me cashew milk for my daily protein intake. The most important thing is drinking lots of water throughout the day.

Let me tell you that the cleanse was not easy. My cravings were through the roof!

The reward was like no other. My body was less bloated, my skin felt hydrated and looked clear, and I had much more energy.

Juice Cleansing is Not For Everyone

If you're thinking about doing a juice cleanse, prep your body at least one week in advance. Eat lots of greens and try to take as many carbs out of you diet as possible.

Juice cleanses aren't for everyone. Drinking fresh pressed juice can be a healthy alternative and also has many benefits to your digestive system.
